This quarterly Top Ten Tuesday topic always kind of stresses me out because it reminds me of all the books I need to read and all the books I didn't get read last season. (Apparently I didn't make a Winter TBR, but I did read six of the ten books on my Fall TBR.) I think I'm just not very good with TBRs in general. Part of the reason is because I'm always swamped with review books and are behind on them the second they fall into my hands (or Kindle). But lately I've also been more of a mood reader (if I'm actually reading for once), and I might be in the mood for vampires today, a gritty contemporary tomorrow, and a high fantasy next week. So really, what's on my TBR is a million different books, and what I'm actually reading just depends.
If you were to look at my nightstand right now, you'd see three books: My current read Pearl; the book club pick I recently finished, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies; and the book I've been "reading" for weeks and am only one chapter into, The Secret History. Somewhere is my Kindle with The Forbidden Orchid on it--also one chapter in. If you were to look at my Gooodreads you'd see that I'm currently reading eight books (though the correct answer is really just three). So my TBR is kind of all over the place.
HOWEVER. The quarter ends this week (like, I have a portfolio due today and a documentation project and short story due tomorrow and that's it), and once it's over I plan to glue my nose to the insides of several books and get some serious reading done. (Especially because I have four classes next quarter, and I believe two are lit classes which means like no reading what I want ever.) So my Spring TBR consists of fifteen books: ten I'm really hoping to get read--helloooooo, Spring Break--including some highly anticipated upcoming releases, and five review books in my possession that I am very much looking forward to reading.
Me Before You // I've seen people rave about this for forever and I watched the trailer...but I fear the tears. (But I made the mistake of watching the trailer again. I'm thisclose to picking it up right now.)
The Secret History // I looked into this book after someone mentioned loving Francis Abernathy and I had no idea who that was. It's good so far I like it, but I just don't have the time to read it. Also, chapter two begins on PAGE 46.
The Hundred-Foot Journey // Next month's book club pick!
The Hobbit // I need to read this for my online book club, but I also want to read it because I want to read it. I read this back in elementary school (maybe a kid's version) and really only remember those stupid trolls taking the poor horses. But I love the movies (minus the end, of course), even though they're different from the book, and every time TNT plays them I watch them and I just want to read this and LOTR.
House of Many Ways // At the end of last year I watched Howl's Moving Castle and became obsessed with Ghibli/Miyazaki movies. Of course, I then had to read the book, despite the warnings that it's very different from the movie and if you love one you'll hate the other. The two definitely differ, but I liked the book and am interested to see where the story goes next (and to see my babies again).
A Court of Mist and Fury // I'm slightly worried about this--okay, maybe a lot worried--because of shippy things. (Let's just leave it at that.) But I'll still be reading it, of course--it is, after all, Sarah J. Maas--and I'll also plan to reread A Court of Thorns and Roses.
The Darkest Corners // I'm rather fond of thrills and haven't read nearly enough of them, but I've had my eye on this one for awhile. Part of me's intrigued because of the cool promo it's been getting--various news links, newspaper clippings, etc. Basically, WANT.
Rescued // I'm super obsessed and in love with Eliot Schrefer's Ape Quartet books. So far we've met bonobos in Endangered and chimpanzees in Threatened, and next we get orangutans and I am so excited. I've been waiting forever for this.
Undead // This is another read for my online book club, and you know what? I actually really want to read it. Sometimes a book just seems like it'll be pure fun to read and you don't expect anything else from it and this book looks like it'll be just that.
Unhooked // Peter Pan retellings are my kryptonite, and I've been hitching to get my hands on this one.
A Fierce and Subtle Poison // This is a literally about a poisonous girl with grass hair and green skin and this boy finds her and the concept just sounds insanely good.
Queen of Hearts // I'm a big fan of Colleen Oakes's Peter Pan retelling Wendy Darling: Stars, and while I'm not the biggest Alice in Wonderland fan, I'm super looking forward to this.
Even if the Sky Falls // A romance set in New Orleans with the impending threat of a hurricane, YES, PLEASE.
Ivory and Bone // There's only one thing that matters about this book and one thing you need to know: it's P R E H I S T O R I C.
With Malice // Again with the thrillers! I saw Brittany at the Book Addict's Guide post about this on one Goodreads saying how good it was. I didn't have too much interest in it before, but hearing that it's an excellent thriller bumped it up the list.

What books will you be springing into this season?
OMG DUDE. Me Before You.....prepare the tissues. It's a great book! I'm nervous/excited about the movie coming out. (and ignore the sequel book ;)) I can also rec THE DARKEST CORNERS. oh my gosh that book is so creepy and delicious. It feels like the perfect book to hand to a fan of Gillian Flynn. You have a great list here Rachel. I also wanted to say I am loving your blog challenge of get up offa that slump...it's been really helpful for me! :)

I've not read House of Many Ways yet, but I definitely agree with the assessment of Howl's Moving Castle. I love the movie, likes the first half or so of the book, and detested the ending. It was very convoluted and I think the movie did a good job of cleaning it up and "fixing" the story.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful and diverse list. Have fun reading. My TTT
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel better, I'm awful at these reading lists too. But I have fun putting them together so there is that. ;)
ReplyDeleteBeyond that, I also have Me Before You on mine and "Poison" sounds/looks amazingly good!
Best of luck with your TBR!
I am SO excited for With Malice too. And Darkest Corners is really good. It's a TAD dramatic... but I liked the mystery and I liked that it had balls. I've also been meaning to read Unhooked. I've liked all the Peter Pan retellings I've read so far, so I'm hoping for more :)
ReplyDeleteMe Before You is an amazing book! :-) It's one of my favourites!
ReplyDeleteI have "Me Before You" on my list before I heard there was a movie coming out. Now I really need to get to the reading of the book before I see the movie. And I've had "The Hobbit" on my list since forever. I'll eventually get it read.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited for Ivory & Bone, it sounds really good! And of course I'm looking forward to ACOMAF. The Hobbit has been on my TBR for so long, I didn't love LOTR (but I ADORE the movies) yet I still want to give it a try. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThere are a few books on your list that are on my general TBR on your list, but they weren't on my TTT list this week.

ReplyDeleteWith Malice, Ivory and Bone, and the Darkest Corners seem like must reads! Unhooked sounds awesome too!
Ooo I totally just started A Fierce and Subtle Poison! It's interesting so far!
ReplyDeleteI'm also excited for A Court of Mist and Fury! Are you going to her event at the University Bookstore?
I'm not sure how I forgot ACoMaF! I NEED that in my life! Also, I'm really interested in A Fierce and Subtle Poison too! Great picks!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Top 10 Tuesday!
