Like last year, I'll be participating in The Class of 2014: YA Superlative Blogfest hosted by Katy Upperman, Jessica Love, Tracey Neithercott, and Alison Miller. It's a four-day fest full of the best YA books and their components with Head of the Class, Popularity Contest, Elements of Fiction, and Best in Show. Get your books, put your thinking cap on, and join the fun!
(Note: All the books are Young Adult--unless otherwise stated--published in 2014, repeats will be avoided as much as possible, and what I've read in 2014 as of the date the post was published.)
Favorite Dystopian
I...didn't read much dystopian at all this year? But I did read this! And oh my goshhh, this book. Talk about EMOTIONS. And sexytimes. [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Science Fiction
ALIENS ARE EVERYWHERE. I had some issues with this book and it took me forever to finish it (and I don't know why, because I ended up liking the POV I thought I'd hate). But mothereffer what was that ending?! [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Fantasy
Favorite Contemporary
I was wary to read this because it's darker and deeper and I don't really like to read that kind of stuff. But my gosh, this was so, so good. The writing was spectacular and the voice was excellent. I loved it. And therefore, you should read it. [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Action/Adventure
This may border on the lines of YA and MG, but whatever. It has CHIMPANZEES. And a BOY living in the WILD with them. He's, like, Jane Goodall and on this great big adventure. I want to be Jane Goodall! [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Historical Fiction
Granted, this is one of the only historical fiction novels I read this year (and the only one that fits the rules), but that doesn't matter. This book was VERY GOOD. I didn't think I was a fan of historical fiction, but after this, I want to read it all. [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Comedy
Of all the 2014 YA releases I read this year, this one would probably have to be the lightest and fluffiest. And it didn't hurt that the main character had three older brothers. It made for some excellent fun. [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Mystery
Have you read The Naturals? Because its sequel is just as practically flawless. I can't even with this series you guys. It is just SO GOOD. Read it read it read it. [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Romance
It was hard to figure out what book to put here, but this was really the only book I read that was super duper focused on romance and that I felt could fit here. And SHIP SHIP SHIP. I looove this series. [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Paranormal
I don't really know what the hell you'd classify this as. Para-super-something. But I surprisingly did not read much paranormal this year (or that was published this year), and I'd say this book full of messed up shit fits the bill okay. [Goodreads | Review]
Favorite Genre Bender
This book was...messy. And I don't know how well it dealed the issue it was dealing with. But this book was addicting and taking a risk, and despite the issues, I really liked it. [Goodreads | Review]
What books are you favorites in this category? And my gosh, this was HARD. Tune in tomorrow to see what characters win in the Popularity Contest!
SO many of these are on my list and I haven't had a chance to read them yet. :( Must fix that SOON!
ReplyDeleteI was nodding my head to so many of your picks here. I still have yet to read HEIR OF FIRE, but I'm pretty sure it would top my list for Fantasy had I read it in time. You have some other picks here that I definitely need to either add to my TBR list or just get reading my copy already. Awesome picks, Rachel!
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with your statement on The Infinite Sea. I keep seeing The Naturals around here and there (on the internet, not in my bookshops - I don't think I've seen them locally but perhaps in a city) so might have to give the series a go. I love your blog design by the way - I've been loving polka dots and gold accents this year! I blame Kate Spade.
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by SOME BOYS -- I hadn't heard of it before now, but it sounds really interesting. Also, I'm seeing A MAD, WICKED FOLLY all over the place today! Must pick it up soon. Can't wait to see your picks for tomorrow, Rachel!
ReplyDeleteSome Boys certainly has a striking cover. I hadn't heard of it before. I read Heir of Fire over the weekend. SO good.
ReplyDeleteThere are are GREAT books on your list. I loved Heir of Fire. Not to mention that A Mad Wicked Folly was wonderful and the ending of the Mara Dyer trilogy was just about perfect. Sounds like you have had a great reading year!

Oh man, The Impossible Knife of Memory is another one I was dying to read this year and just never got it. Thanks for the reminder that I need to read it ASAP.
