Made Me Want to Visit
Made Me Want to Visit
I recently wrote a poem about my bookshelves for my Intro to Creative Writing class, and I ended it with "imagining fiction we wish was non." I read fiction because it's fiction and not some boring textbook or something of the sort. We wish for fiction to be real because in those books the characters feel real--and the world does, too. And there are so many fictional worlds that I wish were real, that I'd like to go to just once, at least. So here are
Fictional
Morganville, Texas is probably the number one fictional place I want to go to. It's the setting for one of my absolute favorite series, the Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine. I love these books and the characters and the stories. Morganville isn't just a place. It's like a second home.
Okay, so the world in Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass series isn't the nicest. But I love it. Therefore, TAKE ME THERE.
We've seen the fantasmical Neverland in all sorts of Peter Pan films. But book like Jodi Lynn Anderson's Tiger Lily and Heidi Schulz's Hook's Revenge have brought the land to life in more magical ways. I'd like a one-way ticket, please and thank you.
Many of Sarah Dessen's novels are set in this fictional small town beach town, and I love it.
The vampire-filled towns in The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black actually aren't really good places at all. But I don't care. There are VAMPIRES and I want to go to one of them (and then leave after like two or three seconds).
The majority of Anna Banks's Syrenia Legacy doesn't even take place in Syrenia. But it's a whole place UNDERWATER and how cool is that? It's like Atlantis but not.
So I still haven't read all the books in the oh-so-famous Harry Potter series. But come on. Who HASN'T wanted to go to freaking Hogwarts?
Nonfictional
I've always wanted to go to Africa because ANIMALS. But Eliot Schrefer's Endangered and Threatened made that even more so. Because APES.
Another place I've always wanted to go to. Because JUNGLE. And the one is Jessica Khoury's Origin is lush and lovely and I WANT TO GO.
We've all wanted to go to the oh-la-la land of Paris, but Stephanie Perkins's Anna and the French Kiss made that want a need.
I live in Washington and still haven't gone, WHAT KIND OF TWIHARD AM I?
What places have books made you want to visit?
Oh, I didn't even think about Morganville! I call dibs on Myrnin, though. I ALMOST put Forks on my list, but honestly, the haters are scary. o.o
ReplyDeleteHahaha Coldtown would be awesome! I want to read that book still! I've never read Harry Potter (seen most of the movies though) but I want to go to Hogwarts! I'm going to read the first book this week!
ReplyDeleteYou want to go to Coldtown? How very brave of you. Love your list. I decided to go with real locations which made the task arduous since I, apparently, don't read many books set in real locations. My TTT book locations
