Be Our Tattooed Guest: Eden + Stars

Welcome to Be Our Tattooed Guest, an original feature here on Beauty and the Bookshelf! This feature is all about tattoos of the literary, poetic, and bookish variety, and people showing them off! To learn more about Be Our Tattooed Guest, please go here.

This week's tattooed guest has a tattoo that's a little starry...

Eden

Artist: A tattoo shop in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

DesignThree stars.

Story: The three stars are a symbol of the legendary Riddle-Master from Patricia A. McKillip's Riddle-Master trilogy. The protagonist, Morgan of Hed, is born with three bronze stars emblazoned on his forehead. Morgan believed he was going to be nothing more than a simple island farmer, but he was in fact destined for greatness such as he had never dreamed of. On his journeys, Morgan acquires a sword and a harp, both with three stars on their faces. Both the harp and sword were made centuries before Morgan was born. I got the stars as my first tattoo because Morgan's story is my favorite epic adventure of all time. I love the conflict between Morgan taking control of his life and embracing the paths laid out for him by fate. The stars on my shoulder remind me that I need to be accepting, strong, and always make my own path in life.
