Underrated Animated Movies
We all know about Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and, of course, Frozen (and yes, Cinderella and Tinker Bell, we all know you're front and center on all things Disney). And don't get me wrong, I love those movies--especially Beauty and the Beast, obviously. But there are other gems in the animated movie world, and I feel like some of them don't get as much notice as they should. So here are ten animated movies that may or may not be somewhat underrated, depending on who you ask, and that I like. Oh, also: nostalgia!
What animated movies do you think are underrated?
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Need I say more past the mention of the word Atlantis? This is a fantastic movie that not nearly enough people have seen, I think. And the characters are funny and great and memorable, and you've seen this movie, yes?
Anastasia
This may not be the most underrated movie (and, contrary to what seems to be popular belief, this isn't a Disney movie), but I don't care. Anastasia gets wrongly outshined by the Disney princesses. This movie--and its characters and MUSIC--is AMAZING. Seriously. You HAVE TO see this.
Balto
BALTOOOOO. This movie makes me want to cry but whatever, it's still AMAZING. I mean, BALTO! And the goose and those bear things and everything. You've seen this, right?!
The Brave Little Toaster
It's been eons since I've seen this movie, and I remember it being kind of odd (and sad?), but it's one of those memorable movies from my childhood. I really need to watch it again soon! Also, when I saw this online while looking up movies, I was all, "Aww, The Brave Little Toaster!"
Dinosaur
Dinosaur is one of my favorite movies. For one, there are DINOSAURS. Two, the animation is FANTASTIC and the story and everything is just so good. And three, the score is MAGNIFICENT (and on Spotify; go listen). If you haven't seen this, I can't even begin to tell you how much you are missing out on.
The Iron Giant
I wish my best friend was an iron giant. Seriously. I think this may have had some cheesy moments, but I don't care. It's seriously underrated and great, now I really want to watch it and I don't have a copy. (Also: THAT ENDING.)
The Lion King 2:
Simba's Pride
I get it: many Disney sequels do not live up to their predecessors. And while The Lion King 2 certainly has its moments, it is still a great movie (and, once again, it's full of great music). Also, this movie is one of my favorites and I might like it more than the first (and I ordered my DVD off eBay a few years ago because of how badly I wanted it).
Quest for Camelot
Yes, this does not have the best graphics and it can feel quite cheesy, but I do not care all that much. This movie is just SO FUN. You've got a two-headed dragon that sings "I Got You Babe," some hilarious chickens, a vile villain, a blind guy, musical numbers, and freaking CAMELOT. So yeah. Watch this.
Treasure Planet
Oh my gosh, THIS MOVIE. It is a freaking gem (or treasure) and seriously, everyone needs to see it. The characters are amazing, the animation is stunning, and the story rocks. TREASURE PLANET. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT.
We're Back:
A Dinosaur Story
Yes, MORE DINOSAURS! (But really, you can never ever get enough of them.) And this time they're coming with an excellent musical number. What animated movies do you think are underrated?
The Iron Giant was so good! I loved that movie and I don't watch a ton of animated movies. Loved it!
ReplyDeleteOMG ATLANTIS AND TREASURE PLANET AND ANASTASIAAAAAAA. Seriously though Dimitri is like... the hottest animated character of all time.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I love this list so so much! I totally agree with all the things. Anastasia is still one of my top favorites!
ReplyDeleteMy TTT
I love Iron Giant and Treasure Planet! I also enjoy Atlantis and Brave Little Toaster but when I was younger my brothers were obsessed with those two movies and we watched them soooo many times. And I totally agree Loin King 2 is just as good if not better than the first. =)
ReplyDeleteI adored The Lion King 2. Such a cute movie.
ReplyDeleteI loved Anastasia, Balto, and We're Back. And you're right, they are underrated.
ReplyDeleteI loved Dmitri!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE Balto so much! I think the only other person I know who has watched it is my mother XD Also really like The Lion King 2 - definitely the best Disney sequel.
ReplyDeleteWe just watched The Iron Giant a few weeks ago! That movie is really great. :) This is a great list!! Great topic choice!
ReplyDeleteAwwww, look at that little baby dinosaur! I'm definitely going to have to let my kids watch that one :)
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, yes, and yes. How can you not love these?!
ReplyDeleteI love pretty much all of those! Lion King 2 is actually my favorite Lion King movie. ;) And Balto, Anistasia, and Quest for Camelot are some of my favorite cartoon movies as well.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.

This is the first I've seen Anastasia on one of these lists! The music in that movie is awesome. *hums 'If I Can Learn to Do It, You Can Learn to Do It!* And Anastasia and Dmitri make a wonderfully spunky pair.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, as for underrated animated movies... I think amongst all the other Disney films, Mulan gets overlooked a lot. I watched that one so many times when I was younger! Hilarious dialogue, a kick-butt heroine, a country in need of saving... what more could you ask for? :D
My Top Ten list
Ugh, BALTO! One of my favoyrite animated movies of all times. When I visited New York recently, I wandered around all Central Park looking for the Balto statue, and almost cried!
