2013 End of Year Book Survey

Jamie the Perpetual Page-Turner, who also happens to be one of my favorite bloggers, put together the totally awesome 2013 End of Year Book Survey, where us reader-folk can share all the best (and not-so-best) bookish things of the year!

Note that I've already shared the Top Ten Books I Read in 2013, and also participated in the Class of 2013 YA Superlative Blogfest, where I shared what books are the Head of the Class, who wins in a Popularity Contest, my favorite Elements of Fiction, and all the bookish components that make up the Best in Show.

And now, let the survey begin!

Best in Books 2013

Best Book I Read
There are a number of reasons why this is my favorite book of the year, one of them being that this book is just so darn good.

I Thought I Would Love This, But Didn't
This year was actually full of books I didn't ending up liking/loving like I thought I would (Cinder/Scarlet, Delirium, Siege and Storm, etc.). But I'm mentioning Nantucket Blue because I technically didn't finish it. I got around 100 pages in then skimmed to the end because I just could not get into it, and the MC drove me crazy.

Most Surprising - In A Good Way!
Again, I could put a number of books here. But I'm going with Cress because I didn't love Cinder and Scarlet, and this? This was EXCELLENT.

I Recommended This The Most
Eleanor & Park and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Best Series I Discovered This Year
Let's see...Penryn & the End of Days, Throne of Glass, Mara Dyer, Newsoul. And those are just the series where I've read more than one book (this year)!

Favorite New Author I Read This Year
Rainbow Rowell!

Best Book Out Of My Comfort Zone &
In A Different Genre
I've never read anything like this, and it was wonderful.

Most Thrilling, Unputdownable Book
Oh gosh, The Rules for Disappearing, The Fault in Our Stars, The Naturals, Crown of Midnight, Fangirl, and so many more.

Book I'm Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year
This was just SO STINKIN' CUTE.

Favorite Cover
It just makes me want to drool.

Most Memorable Character
Does saying the entire cast of the Morganville Vampires, aka my favorite series, cheating?

Most Beautifully Written Book
Lots of great writing this year (Rainbow Rowell, Tahereh Mafi, Bennett Madison, Katie Cotugno, etc.), but I'm going with this one because the writing made it and it's super quotable.

Book That Had The Greatest Impact On Me

I Can't Believe I Waited
UNTIL 2013 To Read This
On the plus side, I didn't have to wait like a year and a half for World After.

Favorite Passage/Quote
I'm very bad at remembering quotes and all that jazz. Like I said earlier, Wild Awake is super quotable. And there are several book passages that give me feels, but to keep things spoiler-free, here's a line (not necessarily my favorite of the year) I liked from Throne of Glass:
"She had often wished for adventure, for old spells and wicked kings."
And this one from The Fault in Our Stars refuses to be forgotten:
"I lit up like a Christmas tree."

Shortest And Longest Book Read
Short Story: The Assassin and the Captain (4 pages)
Novella: The Prince (64 pages)
Shortest Book: Damselfly (205 pages)
Longest Book: Beautiful Creatures (563 pages)

Book With A Reeling Scene
I NEEDED To Talk About
There's a reason I've dubbed this The Book That Shall Not Be Named.

Favorite Relationships
Romance: Shane and Claire, always.
Familial: I love Park's parents.
Friendship: Once again, the Morganville gang.

Favorite Book From An Author
I've Read Previously

Best Book I Read Based
SOLELY On A Recommendation
If people would not have picked Throne of Glass for me to read, and if I hadn't seen so many people raving about Crown of Midnight, I may not have read these books (CoM in particular). I also wouldn't still have a bit of a book hangover. And my feels wouldn't have been messed with.

Genre I Read Most
Oh gosh, I don't know. Probably dystopian. And contemporary and paranormal.

Newest Fictional Crush
Chaol. Levi. Sam. Noah. Xander. Kai. Wolf. Thorne. Tarver. Ethan. Raffe. Sawyer. IDK, ALL OF THEM. I CANNOT CHOOSE ONE.

Best 2013 Debut

Most Vivid World/Imagery
A lot of books could go here, but I want to mention Light. The world in this series, while in the present and in a small part of California, is messed up. Really, seriously messed up (and good).

Book That Was The Most Fun To Read

Book That Made Me Cry

Book That Got Overlooked
If I had to pick one, I think I'd go with this one.

Book Blogging &
Reading Life 2013

Favorite Book Blog Discovery
This was my first full year of blogging, and I think I discovered most blogs this year. So...this list could go on forever. And I don't want to leave anyone out!

Favorite Review I Wrote
I don't know if it's my favorite, but I went emotionally cray cray when I reviewed The Book That Shall Not Be Named.

Best Discussion I Had On The Blog
I haven't really done any discussions, but I did go a little ranty about fictional characters on Tumblr and how I feel about them after I read The Fault in Our Stars.

Most Thought-Provoking Review
Or Discussion On Another Blog
Honestly, I have no idea.

Best Event I Participated In
In real life? ALA Midwinter.
In the blogging/book world? Hmm. The YA Crush Tourney was pretty fun!

Best Moment Of Book Blogging/My Book Life
Going to so many author events. Meeting so many new friends. Reading ALL THE BOOKS.

Most Popular Post On My Blog
Views-wise, my popular post was YA Crush Tourney: You, Me, and the Crush. My review with the most views was Bitter Blood by Rachel Caine

Post I Wish Got A Little More Love
My Sunday Spinetry posts. I know I haven't done one in a while, but I was kind of hoping they'd get more love and participation. It's fun (and a bit of a challenge).

Best Bookish Discovery
Amazon Prime, Edelweiss, NetGalley...

Did I Complete Any Reading Challenges &
Goals I Set At The Beginning Of The Year?
I completed my Goodreads challenge! Admittedly, I started it at 100 but lowered it to 75 when I hit a book slump and just didn't see 100 books happening. I've currently read 79, but by the time this post goes live it should be 80!

Looking Ahead...

Book I Didn't Get To In 2013
That's A 2014 Priority
There are LOTS of books I need to read, but I'm saying this one because I NEED to read it. I've heard so many great things. Plus, I own it now so I have no excuse.

Non-Debut I'm Most Anticipating In 2014

Debut I'm Most Anticipating In 2014
This is one that comes to mind!

Series Ending I'm Anticipating In 2013
Infinite, Ignite Me, The One, The Retribution of Mara Dyer, Isla and the Happily Ever After.

One Thing I Hope To Accomplish With
Reading & Blogging In 2014
Post more. Not just memes and reviews, but everything. Have more variety in posts.

*wipes forehead* Sheesh! That took forever! Here's to 2014, my bookish fiends, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  3. I own Fangirl. So I have to pick up soon. It's interesting that you didn't like Cinder but loved Cress. I haven't started that series yet.
Also My Life Next Door is one of those books I wanna read asap. Everyone keeps raving about how good it is.

    Great answers

  4. The two books that made you cry this year are the same on my list! I was heartbroken while reading Allegiant and The Fault in Our Stars was just super sad.
