Top Ten Tuesday (58)

This Tuesday's theme is...

Top Ten Covers I Wish Didn't Change

So, I'm tweaking this week's topic. Originally, it was Top Ten Covers I Wish I Could Redesign. But I wasn't sure what covers I would redesign (which could be a lot) or where to even start, so I thought I'd just share what covers I wish didn't change, because let's fact it--cover changes are the new black.

*The original cover is the one on the left.

When I wasn't as much of a reader and would take pleasure in browsing the shelves at Borders (rest in peace, I miss you), Across the Universe's hardcover was one that stood out at me every time. If I wasn't so bad at buying books (I'm better now), I probably would've bought that one for the cover alone (plus, it's set in space). I don't dislike the paperback covers, but they're nothing compared to the original (and the one on the far right is second best).

Especially in person, the original cover is so pretty and sparkly. However, the original cover makes me think of fairies, and the new cover werewolves. The wolf thing on the new cover is cool. And I don't hate it, it's just not as good. Also, can I please have that purple hair?

I don't dislike the new covers (though they suggest the books aren't quite as cute and fluffy as they are). And at a glance, the original covers give the idea that the books' contents are cheesy (which they might be, but in the best, non-embarrassing cheesy way), and may be Lifetime movies. HOWEVER. I have two signed hardcovers that ARE NOT GOING TO MATCH Isla's. And that very much bothers me.

Another cover that I fell in love with when I didn't know what the book was. Seeing it on the shelves (it looks flat here, but it is so pretty in person) made me want to read it. While I don't dislike the new cover, it does not compare to the original (oh, what that could've looked like with the other books!).

Long story short: I owned the first two in paperback (wish I had hardcover), but wanted the original cover, so now I have two paperbacks and a hardcover. Not a huge deal, but was the change necessary? I like the first one better, anyway--it suggests steaminess, which this book most definitely has.

You shouldn't change something that's so iconic.

Thank gosh I already have the original covers, because they should be left untouched.

The new covers aren't bad, but they're not as pretty as the originals. Although I will admit that the originals have a slight adult feel. Also, my copies don't all match.

I do not dislike the cover to The Beginning of Everything at all; I really like it. However, it was originally called Severed Heads, Broken Hearts and it had the cover on the left. And there's something about that I just really liked (it's a picture that shows multiple things and illusions), and when they changed it I was kind of bummed.

This trilogy is creepy as hell. However, the right cover suggests zombies and something more bloody and gory, which I don't think really fits the story. The original covers have a dark beauty to them, and I very much prefer them.

What covers are you not a fan of this week?

  1. I *COMPLETELY* agree with all of these (except the HP ones because I actually really adore the new covers... *hides*). What ever possessed them to redesign the Across the Universe books I WILL NEVER KNOW. They were gorgeous. And that redesign for The Devouring...?? O_o Most cover changes are not nearly that drastic, that's crazy.

  2. I actually prefer the new Stephanie Perkins redesigns. I like the face that there aren't models. I wasn't exactly pleased with the change at first, but they've grown on me.

  3. The Across the Universe redesign is a crime! The first one is SO beautiful and those other 2?? ICK!!! I've never seen that Perfect Chemistry redesign, but I hate it!! Black background with a day in the park kissing scene. How does that go? I do love the Sarah Dessen redesigns though. Her old covers were 90's to me and the new covers' colors are so pretty!

  4. The first design of Across The Universe is so beautiful. It's a shame they've ruined the cover!

  5. Nightshade was one of my favourite covers before the redesign. And I am not a creepy book fan but The Devouring is such a great cover that I would have actually read it. Now with the new cover? Don't even think about it!

  6. I think I'm one of the only people that likes the new covers for Delirium and Stephanie Perkins' books. I really enjoy them. But I agree on The Beginning of Everything. The other cover was better.

  8. Ugh - the Across the Universe redesign NEVER should have happened. The original was so gorgeous. But, I thought the one in the middle was the UK version? Great list!

  9. I like the original cover of Anna and the French Kiss than the new one too! Across the Universe should never have been redesigned. It was already so gorgeous. Awesome list!

  10. Great list! Earlier this year, I wrote a post about changing book covers and how much I hate redesigns. Shades of Earth definitely made my list this week.

  11. It's still called Severed Heads and Broken Hearts here in the UK, but the cover isn't as pretty as the one you showed. Completely agree with the list, I hate when they redesign covers and make them worse than the originals! My TTT.

  13. Great twist on the topic. So agreed on Across the Universe. I didn't read it, but the original was so pretty. Also agreed on all those boring Dessen covers. I love the HP redesign though. I think the new one, especially for the first book, is so pretty. Great list!

  15. Lots of good choices on your list and for the most part I agree with you and your reasonings. I'm also hesitant to buy series books now when they first come out as I like my books to match & so when they change with each new book/pb release it makes it hard to start buying until the series is done.

    My TTT is here.

  16. I LOVE how you changed up the topic. The new Anna and the French Kiss covers are gorgeous, but I'm not sure they accurately reflect the books, either. I do love the new HP covers (especially because their spines create a picture of Hogwarts!), but there's nothing like the original.

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!
