Top Ten Tuesday (52)

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

This Tuesday's theme is...

Top Ten Book Turn-Offs

Some of these may be turn-offs, but that doesn't mean they'll stop me from reading a book. For the most part, they're just things that drive me crazy in books.

Whn txt msgs r lk dis its annying k:
Improper Texting
I hate when characters exchange texts and they don't use complete sentences and full words. I text like I'm writing it out--all there and everything. And if Dog cant text with full words, you can, too.

He said she said they said what:
Multiple POVs
I'm not saying I dislike multiple POVs, but if they're not done right, sometimes it's just too much and I get bored because I want certain POVs. But like this picture, sometimes all the POVs can get confusing. 'Nuff said.

I hear what you're saying,
but I kind of just want to punch you:
Annoying Main Characters
If I can't stand the person whose POV I'm reading from, I'm going to have a hard time with the book. And gosh, I hate this movie.

Hey I just met you, and this is crazy,
but I love you, and there's no maybe:
Instalove
Okay, so I'm not necessarily against instalove. But sometimes I get really annoyed when relationships progress way too fast. Like, you just met each other yesterday, you don't already love each other.

Pocahontas would never leave John Smith:
Things That Are Unrealistic
I get that books are fiction, and that in fiction anything is possible. But even then, there needs to be something realistic about the story, and sometimes things happen that I just find unrealistic. And can we please pretend Pocahontas 2 never happened?

I was typing this when, SUDDENLY:
The Word Suddenly
There's just something about this word I can't stand, and I think it started when I read a book and kept the noticing the word. It's okay a little bit (though I still hate it), but when it's used all the time I just ughhh.

When like you like use like the like same
like words like all like the like time:
Overused Words
Don't use the same word a hundred times in the same chapter. I notice.

Rome was built with the snap of your fingers:
Rushing
I like to know details about what happens, and like I some scenes to last a few pages because it's a cool scene. But when something happens--say, a character dying--just like that and that's it, that's rushing through it and I'm unsatisfied.

You already said that. Twice.:
Repeat Information
We already know that you need to do this and that and think this and that. You don't need to tell us a million times.

Come close, lean in, closer, and--ah, man!:
Tension
Okay, so this isn't really a turn-off. BUT. My goodness, the feels that you get from tension. Just kiss already, people!

  1. HA!!!! Your gifs were super funny this week!!! I can't stand insta-love or over-explanation. SO annoying. And I never though about the word suddenly.... but yeah I don't think I'm feeling that either. Cool list :)

  2. YES! to over used words. It's frustrating and I just want to yell and say
    "go find a thesaurus already!"

And yes - instalove isn't something I'm fond of either. I like the journey and discovery that comes along with falling in love... I feel a little ripped off when it's instant!

    Great list!

  3. Ok; your GIFs have me rolling in laughter!!

I hate instalove - usually. Once in awhile? I get lost in it - but the writing has to be phenomenal. (OR extremely sucky, because I did devour Fifty Shades...)

  5. This is what I got out of this: WHAT YOU HATED THE PRINCESS BRIDE?!?!?!?

But seriously actually - yes let's ignore Pocahontas 2 and your post is hilarious hahah (also now I'm going to think about suddenly in books all the time...because that's definitely a thing)

  11. LOL this is a great list! And I'm wishing that I included some of these as well...like Instalove and the overused word and the repeat of info (I hear you the first time, thanks!) I am also not a fan of text speak in books (or emails)...and those things are made even worse when the book is an audio or IM.

    My TTT is here.

  12. I agree with your repeat information section. One thing that I dislike is when reading a series, the author feels the need to completely sum up what has happened in previous books. Sure, a refresher is nice and completely necessary, but it should not take up more than two pages.

  13. Oh oh oh stop, my sides, I'm dying. This whole post made me crack up. So many of them make me want to stand up and cheer. Two caveats:

    1) You don't like TPB?! What?!
    2) Pocahontas 2 is technically the more accurate of the two, since she really married that guy in real life. But I have no idea about anything else, because I never watched it. :)

  14. Love this post. Pretty much the perfect read after a long day so thank you! I shudder at Call Me Maybe, but I do have to admit I like how you spun it ;) I can't even comment on the rest because it would take forever. But this post = amazing.

  15. I HATE IMPROPER TEXTING TOO! I get it, they're texting, it doesn't make you "cool" or "hip" to have your characters butcher the English language!
