Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: Day 8

Dont Look Behind
the Bookshelf
Welcome to Day 8 of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf, ghouls and goblins. (You can see yesterday's post here.) The infestivities are almost over, but there are still a few more days left. To hold you over, I've got another author and another post! But first, you'll have to try and catch...

CHLOE JACOBS

Chloe is the author of Greta and the Goblin King. The book is about a girl, Greta, who falls through a portal and lands somewhere that isn't run by humans--but that's just the start. And since Greta is a bounty hunter, it only makes sense that Chloe's shares what she thinks are...

The Top Ten Creatures That Would Be the Hardest to Catch

I don’t know how many of you know how much I love…like, LOVE…Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yes, I’ll freely admit it. I mean, what’s not to like about a kick-ass chick who rocks a stake, can take on pretty much anything, and come out on top…still with great hair? Buffy was awesome…and trendy too. (Although I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how she could run and fight in some of those heels.)

The one thing that bugged me about the premise of Buffy’s story was that they felt they had to give her superpowers in order for her to be strong enough to be the hero of her own show. And that’s part of the reason why I wanted Greta in my book to be just a regular girl. I wanted to show people that you don’t need superpowers to be strong. That you can be capable, intelligent, determined, and resourceful and still save the day—although it might mean a few more close calls and a little more heartache along the way.

Greta certainly isn’t perfect. She gets hurt, she makes mistakes, she’s stubborn as hell, mistrusting, and hard on herself (and everyone else)…but I bet she can catch any creature out there.

Although, there are probably a few that would be really hard to catch! Let me introduce you to some of the baddies of Greta’s world!

10. Ogres. Ogres are huge. Not all of them are evil, but when the eclipse comes, they—like everything else in Mylena—turn into an even bigger, badder problem!

9. Gnomes aren’t really that big of a deal on their own. They’re nasty thieves and thugs, but they’re also short and pretty stupid, and Greta wouldn’t have any trouble taking one on herself … trouble is, they like to travel in packs and gang up on their prey. Facing eight or ten of them at once might be a little more difficult.

8. Mylena is home to fire ants the size of rats and huge bats that can drain the blood from a pasture full of cattle and still go back for more. Trying to catch either one of these would be virtually impossible because of where they live, the heart of the Brimstone caves, where boiling hot lava runs just below the surface of a thin crust of sand and rock.

7. Harpies are freaky. They only come out at night and they make no sound except to copy every noise you make, so when they swoop down out of the air with their huge, bat-like, leathery wings, the only thing you’ll hear as they pluck you right off the ground are your own screams echoing back at you.

6. Wraiths are ghosts…with teeth. Another creature that only comes out at night, they’re really hard to kill because you can’t grab onto them. Like oil and water and smoke and shadows, they’ll just slip right through your fingers. They used to be of the faerie race, but dark magick transformed them into evil shells of their former selves, and the ghostly parasite is all that’s left of them.

5.  Mylena is home to some pretty crazy creatures, including a creepy centipede-like thing the size of a Shetland pony, with pincers that could easily crush through bone. Imagine a deserted faerie castle crawling with these things, and see if that doesn’t make you shiver.

4. Every person in Mylena is susceptible to going Lost, losing themselves to the pull of Mylena’s two moons. For Greta, it’s like being the only sane, normal person in a world full of were-creatures. Don’t get me wrong, she tracks these poor beasts on a daily basis, but that doesn’t mean they’re easy to catch. Each one is a more dangerous version of its normal Mylean self.

3. Ghouls are creepy, dangerous, and deadly. In fact, one of them almost got the best of Greta when they met up. It spits poison from its mouth in a thick stream that causes immediate paralysis in its victims, so that once the poison does its thing it can take its time eating you!

2. Agramon, aka very powerful, uber-evil demon from another dimension. Enough said (actually, if I said more about him, I’d give away too much!) But…uber-evil.

1. The Goblin King. Don’t be fooled by how hot he looks. He’s big trouble for Greta because he’ll crawl right up into her head, invade her dreams, make her want things she’s never considered before. And when the eclipse comes…the Goblin King is the most dangerous thing walking, maybe even more than Greta can handle.

So, what do you think? What non-Mylean creatures do you think would give Greta a run for her money? Vampires? (*scoff* no way!) Witches? (oh, I forgot to mention those…) Zombies? Something else?

Thanks for having me visit today!!!

Tips for Catching Mylean Creatures
Title: Greta and the Goblin King

While trying to save her brother from a witch’s fire four years ago, Greta was thrown in herself, falling through a portal to Mylena, a dangerous world where humans are the enemy and every ogre, ghoul, and goblin has a dark side that comes out with the eclipse.

To survive, Greta has hidden her humanity and taken the job of bounty hunter—and she’s good at what she does. So good, she’s caught the attention of Mylena’s young goblin king, the darkly enticing Isaac, who invades her dreams and undermines her will to escape.

But Greta’s not the only one looking to get out of Mylena. An ancient evil knows she’s the key to opening the portal, and with the next eclipse mere days away, every bloodthirsty creature in the realm is after her—including Isaac. If Greta fails, she and the lost boys of Mylena will die. If she succeeds, no world will be safe from what follows her back...

The Hardest Creature to Catch
Chloe Jacobs is a native of nowhere and everywhere, having jumped around to practically every Province of Canada before finally settling in Ontario where she has now been living for a respectable number of years. Her husband and son are the two best people in the entire world, but they also make her wish she'd at least gotten a female cat. No such luck. And although the day job keeps her busy, she carves out as much time as possible to write. Bringing new characters to life and finding out what makes them tick and how badly she can make them suffer is one of her greatest pleasures, almost better than chocolate and fuzzy pink bunny slippers.
