Dont Look Behind
the Bookshelf
Welcome to Day 2 of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf, you cursed being. (You can see yesterday's post here.) Unfortunately, you decided to look behind the bookshelf (it's much scarier than looking under the bed), so now you're stuck here. Fortunately, I'm going to give you a little treat--an interview from a witchy author! Her Halloween-esque books have illusions, deceptions, and magic--oh my! It's no magic trick--please give a bloody warm welcome to...

TERI BROWN

Teri is the author of Born of Illusion and its upcoming sequel Born of Deception, a series that features the daughter of Houdini and all kinds of magical wonders. While I can't say whether or not Teri is a witch, I did get her to do a little witchcraft for this post. Get your magic books ready to take some notes, for I asked Teri to share her...

Top Ten Spells you'd
create for yourself

I learned a lot about magic when I wrote Born of Illusion. Anna Van Housen, my heroine and Harry Houdini’s daughter, is a talented magician and my research included learning the secrets behind some very cool magic tricks. But real magic? Oh, I’d love to be able to do some real Harry Potter kind of magic. That would be EPIC. So without further ado, the top ten magic spells I would create for myself!

1. Dishwasher-doicus: A spell that would make an automatic dishwasher. No, like my dishes would fly from the sink into the dishwasher all by themselves

2. Teri-levitatica: I want to fly, levitate, float, what have you. I do it in my dreams all the time, why not real life?

3. Muteious-hubbius: A spell that would stop my husband from coming in to talk to me while I’m writing an important scene.

4. Feline-disappearium: A spell that would get the cat hair off my black yoga pants.

5. Weedious-removious: An incantation that would remove weeds from my garden.

6. Starbuckium-deliverum: A never ending supply of mochas and lattes!

7. Firthious-romantica: A love potion that would make Colin Firth my love slave.

8. Karmica-Abitchious: A spell that makes pimples appear all over my enemies’ faces.

9. Congressional-Kickassium: The ability to make our government officials actually work together and accomplish something.

10. Terium-Bestsellerous: And finally, I would make all of my books best sellers…how cool would that be?

Anna Van Housen has a secret.

A gifted illusionist, Anna assists her mother, the renowned medium Marguerite Van Housen, in her stage show and séances, easily navigating the underground world of magicians, mediums, and mentalists in 1920’s New York. As the illegitimate daughter of Harry Houdini—or so Marguerite claims—sleight of hand illusions have never been a challenge for Anna. The real trick is keeping her own gifts secret from her opportunistic mother. Because while Marguerite’s own powers may be a sham, Anna possesses a true ability to sense people’s feelings and foretell the future.

But as Anna’s powers intensify, she begins to experience frightening visions of her mother in peril, which leads her to explore the powers she’s tried so long to hide. And when a mysterious young man named Cole moves into the flat downstairs, introducing Anna to a secret society that studies people with gifts like hers, she is forced to confront her past and rethink everything she’s ever known. Is her mother truly in danger, or are Anna’s visions merely illusion? And could the great Houdini really be her father, or is it just another of Marguerite’s tricks?

From Teri Brown comes a world bursting with magic, with romance, and the temptations of Jazz Age New York—and the story of a girl about to become the mistress of her own destiny.

Budding illusionist Anna Van Housen is on top of the world: after scoring a spot on a prestigious European vaudeville tour, she has moved to London to chase her dream and to join an underground society for people like her with psychic abilities. Along with her handsome beau, Cole Archer, Anna is prepared to take the city by storm.

But when Anna arrives in London, she finds the group in turmoil. Sensitives are disappearing and, without a suspect, the group’s members are turning on one another. Could the kidnapper be someone within the society itself—or has the nefarious Dr. Boyle followed them to London?

As Cole and Anna begin to unravel the case and secrets about the society are revealed, they find themselves at odds, their plans for romance in London having vanished. Her life in danger and her relationship fizzling, can Anna find a way to track down the killer before he makes her his next victim—or will she have to pay the ultimate price for her powers?

Set in Jazz-Age London, this alluring sequel to Born of Illusion comes alive with sparkling romance, deadly intrigue, and daring magic.

The show's Audience
“Characterization is a strength in this first-person narrative, in which the setting, New York City in the 1920s, is so richly drawn as to become a character in itself …. Will appeal to fans of Libba Bray.” — Kirkus Reviews
“Teri Brown creates a world of magic and deception, romance and intrigue. This book sparkles with dark arts.” — Melissa Walker, author of UNBREAK MY HEART
“I suppose I could wax on about this book’s strengths—its magic, romance and exquisite historical detail—but the bottom line is: Teri Brown’s BORN OF ILLUSION is the most thoroughly enjoyable novel I’ve read all year.” — Lauren Baratz-Logsted, author of THE TWIN'S DAUGHTER

The IllUsionist
Teri Brown is most proud of her children, but coming in a close second is the fact that she jumped out of an airplane and beat the original Legend of Zelda video game. She is a word scribbler, head banger, math hater, book reader, food fixer, kitty keeper, and city slicker. Teri lives with her husband and way too many pets in Portland, Oregon.
