Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: That's A Wrap!

Dont Look Behind
the Bookshelf
You, my dear, dear readers, survived thirteen days of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf. At least, I think you did. Are you okay? You're looking a little pale...Anyway, since today is Halloween, that means Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf is, unfortunately, over. But just in case you missed something or want to see it again, here's a quick recap!

Review: The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Title: The Naturals
Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Publishing Date: November 5, 2013
Pages/Format: 304, eARC

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.

Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: Day 13

Dont Look Behind
the Bookshelf
Welcome to Day 13 of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf, you demonic little readers. (You can see yesterday's post here.) Today brings the final author of this feature, but unfortunately that doesn't mean it's going to get any better behind the bookshelf. In fact, it's going to get a little dark, a little Gothic, and a little devilish. But don't worry, there's no need to sharpen your pitchforks for...

I very recently picked up this author's already released contemporary after finishing Allegiant in an attempt to feel better (it did help a bit.) And after finishing that book--and LOVING IT--I wanted her next contemporary right away. But of course it's not out yet (and not downloadable on Edelweiss yet, either). So as soon as there are ARCs of this book I will do many things to get one. My feelings toward reading this are not...

Review: Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Title: Allegiant
Author: Veronica Roth
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publishing Date: October 22, 2013
Pages/Format: 526, Hardcover

One choice will define you.

What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

This week I'm waiting on a book that looks like it may go a little deeper than just a cute and fluffy romance, like Rainbow Rowell's books. And not only does it sound awesome, but it features an MC with a physical disability, which I don't see very often. Say what you will, but I would like to read this book right now.

Check it Out: The Dollhouse Asylum by Mary Gray

Over a year ago, I heard about a book. The concept completely intrigued me--a book composed of people pretending to be some of the most famous and tragic literary couples? YES, PLEASE. That book was The Dollhouse Asylum. Since then, I've been waiting (and waiting and waiting) on the book. Waiting for a cover and a synopsis and for the book to just finally be here. I also became friends with Mary Gray, the author. (She is so totally awesome and her links are farther down and you absolutely must follow her.) Have I ever mentioned that author (and bookish!) friends are the best? It's been so great getting to know Mary and making a new friend, even though the wait for this book was forever. But now, it's October 22, 2013. And that means that The Dollhouse Asylum is here.

Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Title: The Raven Boys
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Publishing Date: September 18, 2012
Pages/Format: 409, Hardcover

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

Giveaway: Saying Goodbye to a Series

As you may or may not know, I am a huge fan of Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires series. I believe I started the series toward the end of my freshman year of high school, and at the time just a few of the books were out. But once I started reading them, I couldn't stop. I read each and every book (and have done multiple rereads and scannings of favorite parts), and while I may have fallen behind a couple times, I read most of them around the time they came out. This series has become one of my absolute favorites, and with November 5 (remember, remember the fifth of November) fast approaching, the series is coming to an end.
