Top Ten Tuesday (43)

This Tuesday's theme is...

Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You Not Pick Up A Book

Top Ten Tuesday has just been full of hard topics lately, hasn't it? This week I am super stumped, more so than usual. I usually look for things in a book that I do like, not what I don't like. So the difficulty here is sky level. However, I shall try! Also, please note that just because one of the following topics may be in a book, doesn't mean I won't read it. They're just not my favorite.

NOBODY IS SITTING IN A TREE,
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
Here's the deal: I need at least a teensy tiny bit of romance in a book. I need something--or someone--to root for, and I love romance. If a book doesn't have any, I'm going to have a hard time getting through it.

COACH SAID TO FAKE RIGHT,
AND BREAK LEFT
Ah, sports. I've played them a bit--like soccer...in the 2nd Grade. I'm not a very athletic person, so when a book is about sports I'm slightly bored. I'm not against books having sports; I'm just not a huge fan of it being just about sports.

NO GIRLS ALLOWED
I'm trying to say this as unsexist, judgmental, and nicely as possible. so don't point a pitchfork at me: boy books. I feel like there are some books geared mainly toward boys, and they're just not my thing. (This is rare, because I can't think of much like this, but I know there are some.) That's not to say I dislike boy POVs. There are several great ones, like Cas in Anna Dressed in Blood, Tom in The Wereling (you know, some people might call that series boy books, but they're one of my favorites), the Gone series, etc. Do you kind of understand what I mean?

THOSE KIDS THAT ANNOY ME
They're not all bad, and no offense to you if you are one, but I, for the most part, hate Middle Schoolers. They just annoy the crap out of me. That being said, MG is not a genre I'm big on or have read most of--though it's not because of my dislike of the age group. I just feel like MG is a little too...immature? It's just not at my level of what I like, and I don't think it's got a lot of romance, something I really like. That said, there is some MG that I want to read, like Percy Jackson and Disneylanders.

LOTS AND LOTS OF KISSING AND OTHER THINGS
While Middle Grade isn't mature for my taste, adult is too mature. I'm not talking about all adult, but a lot of it. I'm not a huge fan of lots and lots of hot bedroom--or other places--time and adult subjects. Plus, I like reading about teens. I may be twenty but I say I'm five. Also, I have read and liked and loved several adult books, but it's not something I usually pick up. Plus, my mom already thinks I read "teen erotica." I don't really feel like having her think I read real erotica, too.

FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN YEARS AGO
skfjldsjfwoieufsjvjk--Sorry, I fell asleep on my keyboard, because HISTORY. It's never been my favorite subjects. It kind of sort of really bores me. There's some history that I like. For instance, the time periods in Godbersen's The Luxe series, Jillian Larkin's Flappers trilogy, and The Madman's Daughter. But other times, I'm just wondering if I can get through the book. It's part of why I'm hesitant to read Grave Mercy and Code Name Verity--I'm afraid I'll be super bored because those time periods aren't my favorite. Sorry, history buffs!

CHANGING ITS ATOMIC ISOTOPE INTO A RADIOACTIVE SPIDER
Science Fiction and Fantasy. While I don't dislike them, they're just not my favorite and I don't love them like I love other genres. I do fancy Incarnate and...that's the only one I can think of, but I know there's more! Sometimes I just don't understand everything that's happening or being explained in those books, which makes them harder to like. But I'll try to read more, I promise!

RAIN, CLOUDS, AND GRAY SKIES
Tough subjects. They're, well, tough. And I have to be in a mood to go to those places. These books are usually dark, and I don't always feel like reading a dark book, because then I'll feel dark, you know? So I'm kind of touchy and picky with these books.

REMEMBER THE FAULT IN OUR STARS?
Oh, a book about cancer. That'll be sad, but how bad can it be? SO SAD I HAD THE FEELS SO BAD. That's how bad. (But excellent, not really bad.) Since That Book, I'm not sure that I could handle a book about a serious illness, because woah--my heart will hurt.

WARNING: HAVE TISSUES READY
Also since That Book, I am wary of books that may make me cry out of sadness. Hence why I am waiting on any other John Green books (I'm afraid of him, I think), If I Stay and Where She Went, and Second Chance Summer (thanks for the warning, Morgan!), and more. That Book made me cry and feel so upset, and I don't think I can go through that again anytime soon.

Whew! *wipes brow* I managed to come up with ten topics, which pleasantly surprises me. What about you? What makes you hesitant to pick up a book?

  1. Oh man, books that make you cry are really hard, aren't they? I read If I Stay and Where She Went while traveling out in the open. I was that girl ugly crying on trains, planes and automobiles. It was embarrassing, but worth it... I guess?

  2. Tearjerkers and illness books are the worst, as is history. I agree, boring! Good list, I see a few topics I mentioned as well.

  3. I don't like tough subjects either. I read a book so that I can be taken away from the crap I had to deal with in every day life. Love the titles of your top ten! Clever!

  4. I like the taglines you came up with! They're adorable! ;D
But yeah, sports and history books are just not the books for me. In fact, I'm afraid I'll fall asleep while reading them.
    Great list! (:

  5. Your titles are FANTASTIC! As for the tough subjects- I don't mind reading a book here or there as long as I know enough in advance this is a book to read at home and not on the train. Crying in public is something no one wants to see.

  6. YES! I was afraid I'd be the only one with boy books on the list because I felt like everyone would glare at me for being sexist :)

  7. Hahaha, loved your list & how you organized the topics! Also, I REALLY hope #2 was a HSM reference :) Definitely agree about the tough topics category, too - I can barely handle tearjerker films, and that's only two hours of pathos. What I CAN'T handle is seven to fourteen hours of sadfaces.

    Thanks for sharing!

  8. I know what you mean about Middle Grade! Lately I've been noticing that it just doesn't entertain me like it used to. It's kind of sad, really. Mostly I just hate how black and white the characters are in the genre. The last one I really liked was Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursa. Nice list! :D

  9. Very cool list. I like how you topic'ed them. Anyhow, you make me laugh... I think I might have to follow you :) TFIOS tore my heart out as well... and made me contemplate life for endless hours... and made me think about dying and how we're all going to die someday. Yeah that was a pretty crap time for me. But I loved the book!! It's complicated.

Real Middle Schoolers annoy the heck out of me, but fictional Middle Schoolers are ok in my book. And Erotica is a hell-no for me. Adult books are very rare for me also.

Thanks for stopping by My TTT

  10. I love the way you structured the post! Especially "Noone is sitting, kissing in a tree". Agree with that! There's got to be a lil romance involved :)
