Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: The End

Dont Look Behind the Bookshelf
For thirteen days I told you not to look behind the bookshelf. And you did. Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: Day 13

Dont Look Behind the Bookshelf
What are you doing here? Did you not see the letters in huge red script?! It told you not to look behind here--and you did. Now you have no choice but to pry your eyes open and be exposed to yet another day of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf. (You can see yesterday's interview here.) The final interview of this spookish feature has an author who's not-yet-released debut novel contains one of the things that scares people year round, every night--nightmares. You'll want to have an affair with her novel when it's out! Please awake from your daydreams and welcome...

Mindee Arnett

Trick or treat?
Treat.

Truth or dare?
Dare, especially one that involves crossing the cemetery at night or investigating the abandoned house.

Best Halloween creature?
Ghosts.
What’s the worst and best candy to get on Halloween?
Worst: Candy corn (yes, I know, but I just can’t stand it)
Best: Milky Way Midnight Bar (this is my MC’s favorite, too)

What’s your most memorable Halloween costume?
This one isn’t mine, but it’s too good not to share. A friend of mine once went as an outhouse. He made it out of a refrigerator box and cut slits in the sides to carry it around. Funny part is that he wore it to an annual bonfire/keg/Halloween party out in the country. Needless to say, the costume functioned as an actual outhouse more than once that evening, ahem.

Best movie to watch for Halloween?
R-rated movie – The Descent. Easily one of the scariest and also one of the best crafted horror stories, period.
Family rated movie (scary) – The Watcher in the Woods. This is an old Disney. It scared the beejeebees out of me as a kid. It was my first introduction to scary stories.
Family rated movie (fun) – Hocus Pocus. No explanation needed here, right?

What scares you?
Clowns. Nuff said.
If you could be any Halloween creature what would you be?
A witch. I mean, if I’m going to have to be evil, at least I’d get to carry a wand and maybe ride a broomstick.
Do you have a real-life experience Halloween story?
I don’t have a Halloween specific story, but I did live in a genuine haunted house for about 2 years. It was a farm house built in 1842. We had several strange occurrences. Objects would randomly disappear and then reappear in the strangest of places such as a flashlight in the middle of the driveway and car keys in a side door pocket of a car after several people checked for them there multiple times. Also, our dogs would regularly bark at empty furniture as if someone were sitting in it. Creepy. You know what they say about animals being more sensitive to the supernatural…
Mindee's dogs. Woof!
If you could go back in time and rewrite the legend of a fictional monster/creature, which would you choose?
Hmmm…this is a tough one. Maybe The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Hansel and Gretel.

How do you celebrate Halloween?
With a BIG party. Both of my children were born on October 30th.

In about 140 characters or less please a super short Halloween story.
Okay, how about the opening to one of my short stories:

Someone had moved the headstone, dragging it from the top of the grave to its center as if to weigh down the dead lying uneasy in its coffin. Everett Thornton had died five days ago, but no one in town really believed it.

It’s Friday the 13th, you’re home alone, and it’s dark. Simultaneously, the phone rings and you hear somebody upstairs. What do you do?
Call the dogs, and go for the guns. We live in the country, after all.

If you were in a horror movie with a classic killer what would you do to survive?
Unfortunately, I’m pretty certain I stand no chance of surviving. Too many strikes against me. I’m not a virgin, I’m blonde, and I’m definitely capable of a hellacious scream.

If some of your characters were going to dress up for Halloween, what would they dress up as?
My characters would be wearing costumes appropriate for a masquerade ball. That’s because Arkwell Academy holds a masquerade ball to celebrate Halloween, or more pecifically, Samhain.
Using the letters of NIGHTMARE, how would you describe yourself?
Neurotic
Independent
Goal-oriented
Hot-tempered
Type A
Motivated
Articulate
Rebellious
Energetic

What’s your novel The Nightmare Affair about? Why do think it works for Halloween?
The Nightmare Affair is a murder mystery set at an all-magical school. All the characters, save one, are magical. There are witches, sirens, fairies, demons, you name it. It’s full of Halloween themes. The murder takes place in a cemetery! There’s lots of magic and mayhem.
The Nightmare Affair doesn’t come out for a while, so what are you doing in the meantime? Is there a new book in the works?
Right now I’m tentatively working on book 2 of my YA sci-fi series. I’m also expecting my edit letter for the first book in the sci-fi series any day now. After that, I should be working on revisions of book 2 in the Arkwell Academy series, followed by drafting of book 3. I also have 3 projects in the pre-writing phase. One is a YA supernatural thriller/horror, another is a YA fantasy which I like to think of as Shadow and Bone meets the Pony Express, and the third is a YA sci-fi thriller/horror.
Mindee Arnett lives on a horse farm in Ohio with her husband, two kids, a couple of dogs, and an inappropriate number of cats. She’s addicted to jumping horses and telling tales of magic, the macabre, and outer space. She has far more dreams than nightmares.

But when Dusty sneaks into Eli Booker’s house, things get a whole lot more complicated. He’s hot, which means sitting on his chest and invading his dreams couldn’t get much more embarrassing. But it does. Eli is dreaming of a murder.

Then Eli's dream comes true.

Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: Day 12

Dont Look Behind the Bookshelf
What are you doing here? Did you not see the letters in huge red script?! It told you not to look behind here--and you did. Now you have no choice but to pry your eyes open and be exposed to yet another day of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf. (You can see yesterday's interview here.) Today features an author whose books are about creatures a lot like werewolves, making them just right for the Halloween season. Kirkus called her most recent novel "an enjoyable, mystical coming-of-age, complete with quick getaways, [and] motorcycle chases." Please stay in your human form and welcome...

Karen Kincy

Trick or treat?
Trick. Shenanigans are so entertaining.

Truth or dare?
Dare—I dare you to guess how many books I have on my to-be-read list right now.

Best Halloween creature?
Werewolves all the way! Just look at Bloodborn. Also, werepuppies, which are even cuter. Though I do have an undying love of zombies. (Pun intended.)

What’s your most memorable Halloween costume?
Well, there was that time I was an Orion green-skinned lady from Star Trek. That involved hellacious amounts of green face paint and a lot of strange stares on the bus. I did get to wear that costume to a Star Trek party where they were serving Romulan ale and Klingon bloodwine.
I’ve also been a zombie. I love zombies.
(Yes, both photos are in the same spot, my college apartment. Many escapades began there.)

Best movie to watch for Halloween? Best book to read?
It’s not actually supposed to be a Halloween movie, but when I watched Black Swan at the eleven o’clock showing at night, I remember being so creeped out by the horror scenes that I didn’t want to go to the bathroom alone in the nearly abandoned theater…
As for books, have you read House of Leaves? I had to read it for class back in college, during fall quarter, which was of course around Halloween. That book is super creepy and will make you not want to stay in your own house, especially alone in the dark.

If you could go back in time and rewrite the legend of a monster/creature, which would you choose?
I would rewrite the legend of vampires, just to see how Twilight would come out different.

How do you celebrate Halloween?
By buying as many pumpkins and pumpkin-flavored edibles as humanly possible. So far I’ve had pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin ravioli, and pumpkin bread. I also love to butcher pumpkins, bake them in the oven, and concoct pie from scratch. And yes, I realize this makes me sound like a vegetarian serial killer.

[Beauty and the Bookshelf adds: Have you tried Dreyer's pumpkin ice cream? It's amazing.]

It’s Friday the 13th, you’re home alone, and it’s dark. Simultaneously, the phone rings and you hear somebody upstairs. What do you do?
Friday the 13th is my lucky day, actually, so I’d assume the phone call would be my agent telling me fabulous good news, and the noise upstairs was just my bratty 13-pound black cat.

If you were in a horror movie with a classic killer what would you do to survive?
Well, since I’m a blonde, I’m either a ditzy bimbo doomed to die in the beginning, or I’m going to survive all the way until the end credits. Since the second option sounds better, I’d probably find myself a nice high perch somewhere and wait for the killer to blunder past, then drop something heavy or acidic or molten on his head.

If some of your characters were going to dress up for Halloween, what would they dress up as?
I have a feeling Gwen, Brock, and Tavian wouldn’t dress up as any sort of paranormal creatures—consider how they are a pooka, a werewolf, and a kitsune—but instead would go for more mundane costumes. Gwen would be a pirate, or maybe Amy from Doctor Who since she has the red hair to pull it off; Brock would be a Roman solider or something equally macho; Tavian would probably be ironic and parody a hipster.
What are five facts about yourself?
-I can be bribed with cute little houseplants. Or chocolate. Or both.
-My eyes are listed as hazel on my driver’s license; they shift between green and amber.
-I can speak French and Mandarin conversationally, and a smidgen of German.
-I once worked as a carnie, enticing guys to play a (rigged) basketball game.
-I have the ability to cross my toes.

Using the letters of KITSUNE, please describe your novels.
Karen has an author’s crush on Tavian, since he’s a foxy fox-spirit.
In Foxfire, there are faceless ghosts, mysterious temples, and dangerous secrets.
This means the book is awesome. You should read it.
Seriously.
Unless you are allergic to awesome.
Not sure I can help you with that.
Evidently I have a knack for annoying acrostics.

What’s next for you in your writing career?
I have several Super Secret WIPs in the works! One of them is a middle-grade historical fantasy involving cake-eating zombies; one of them is a Steampunk Book of Awesome co-authored with Chelsea Campbell; and one of them is a really secret book I won’t tell you anything about.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Despite the methodical murders, the police are ignoring evidence that suggests a serial killer. In the midst of terrible loss and danger, Gwen—along with a mysterious and sexy guy who happens to be a Japanese fox spirit—risks her life to find the murderer. "The kitsune legend has never looked so good. Tavian is one sexy fox."--Julie Kagawa, New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fae series and the Blood of Eden series

Tavian and Gwen race to find a magical cure in the third thrilling Other novelTavian has never forgotten his real mother, a shapeshifting Japanese fox spirit like himself, who abandoned him. On a trip to Japan, his homeland, he discovers that she's alive. But a faceless ghost warns Tavian to stay away from her. Even worse, Tavian's magical fox powers have vanished. Finding his mother in Tokyo's seamy underworld may be his only chance to beat back the vicious dog spirits stalking him and his girlfriend Gwen--and to recover from a fatal magical illness eroding his human side.

Karen Kincy gets brownie points for being a local author, and her books are some you definitely don't want to miss--they take an interesting spin on werewolves (we need more of those in YA books!). Be sure to return to Beauty and the Bookshelf tomorrow (and through October) for the rest of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf--fourteen days, thirteen authors, one giveaway.

Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: Day 11

Dont Look Behind the Bookshelf
What are you doing here? Did you not see the letters in huge red script?! It told you not to look behind here--and you did. Now you have no choice but to pry your eyes open and be exposed to yet another day of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf. (You can see yesterday's interview here.) Today's author has two Halloween perfect novels--one may possess you, while the other is sure be a murderously good read. Kirkus called her most recent novel "a scary gorefest of murder and mayhem, not for the faint of heart [...] a breatheless read." Please stop sharpening your knives as I present to you...

GretcheMcNeil
Trick or treat?
Treat. Preferably jelly beans.

Truth or dare?
Dare. I rarely tell the truth.

Best Halloween creature?
I'm partial to the big guy, Mr. Frankenstein. Gotta love that he wears a sports jacket…
What’s the worst and best candy to get on Halloween?
Best would be a full sized Twix bar. I love Twix. Especially the peanut butter one. Worst candy is laffy taffy. Nothing like picking neon colored cement out of your teeth.

What’s your most memorable Halloween costume?
Freshman year of high school my best friend and I went as roller derby nuns – Sister Sledge and Sister Slaughter. We were awesome. In our minds.

Best movie to watch for Halloween? Best book to read?
Best Halloween movie is Clue. I have been watching Clue on Halloween since before you were born. It's a tradition. Best read? The Exorcist, of course!
What scares you?
Demonic possession. Hands down the scariest thing ever. See above. :D
If you could be any Halloween creature what would you be?
BRIDE OF CHUCKIE!!!
How do you celebrate Halloween?
There is costuming. Always. This year, my boyfriend and I are going as Little Zombie Annie and Daddy Zombucks. We've got two parties, and on Halloween itself, there will be the Clue viewing.

In about 140 characters or less, please write a super short Halloween story.
The voices in my head tell me I should kill you when I finish this senten--

It’s Friday the 13th, you’re home alone, and it’s dark. Simultaneously, the phone rings and you hear somebody upstairs. What do you do?
I get the f*** out of the house!!!!

If you were in a horror movie with a classic killer what would you do to survive?
That girl at the end of Friday the 13th had it right: get in a boat in the middle of the damn lake!

If some of your characters were going to dress up for Halloween, what would they dress up as?  Minnie would be something slutty – slutty Alice in Wonderland, slutty Little Red Riding Hood. And Meg would be some literary character, like Miss Havisham.
Using the letters of MURDER, please describe yourself.
Maddening. Urbane. Ridiculous. Devilish. Entrepreneurial. Redhead.

What can you tell us about your novels Possess and Ten? What might make them Halloween-esque?
I can't think of two more Halloween-esque books! ;) Possess is simple – teen exorcist. The scary kind. With demonic dolls. And Ten is old school horror – ten teens trapped on an island with a serial killer, getting picked off one by one.

You have some more novels in the works, like 3:59 and the Don’t Get Mad series. Will they be like your previous novels, and will they terrify readers? (In a good way.)
3:59 should be scary. It's sci-fi horror about two girls who are the same girl in different dimensions, who discover that their worlds connect every twelve hours – at 3:59 – for one minute. When they decide to switch places for a day, all hell breaks loose. Literally.

But Get Even and Get Dirty, books one and two in the Don't Get Mad series, will be more mystery/suspense. They're about four very different girls who have formed a secret revenge society, getting back at bullies and mean girls who have terrorized their classmates, which all goes well until one of their targets turns up dead and the society is implicated in the death.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I like champagne. A lot. :D

Gretchen McNeil is an opera singer, writer and clown. Her YA horror Possess about a teen exorcist debuted with Balzer + Bray for HarperCollins in 2011. Her follow up Ten – YA horror/suspense about ten teens trapped on a remote island with a serial killer – was released September 18, 2012, and her third novel 3:59 – sci fi doppelganger horror about two girls who are the same girl in parallel dimensions who decide to switch places – is scheduled for Fall 2013. Gretchen's new YA contemporary series Don't Get Mad (Revenge meets The Breakfast Club) about four very different girls who form a secret society where they get revenge on bullies and mean girls begins Fall 2014 with Get Even, followed by the sequel Get Dirty in 2015, also with Balzer + Bray.
Gretchen is a former coloratura soprano, the voice of Mary on G4's Code Monkeys and she sings with the LA-based circus troupe Cirque Berzerk. Gretchen blogs with The Enchanted Inkpot and is a founding member of the vlog group the YARebels where she can be seen as "Monday." She is repped by Ginger Clark of Curtis Brown, Ltd.

And their doom comes swiftly.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives – three days on Henry Island at an exclusive house party. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their own reasons for wanting to be there, both of which involve Kamiak High’s most eligible bachelor, T.J. Fletcher. But what starts out as a fun-filled weekend turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly, people are dying and the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

Rule #1: Do not show fear.
Rule #2: Do not show pity.
Rule #3: Do not engage.
Rule #4: Do not let your guard down.
Rule #5: They lie.

Fifteen-year-old Bridget Liu just wants to be left alone: by her mom, by the cute son of a local police sergeant, and by the eerie voices she can suddenly and inexplicably hear. Unfortunately for Bridget, it turns out the voices are demons – and Bridget has the rare ability to banish them back to whatever hell they came from.

Terrified to tell people about her new power, Bridget confides in a local priest who enlists her help in increasingly dangerous cases of demonic possession. But just as she is starting to come to terms with her new power, Bridget receives a startling message from one of the demons. Now Bridget must unlock the secret to the demons' plan before someone close to her winds up dead – or worse, the human vessel of a demon king.

While I haven't read Possess yet, I have read Ten, and I'll tell you this: if you haven't read it, what are you waiting for? Now's the perfect time! It's one of those books that must be read at night when everyone else is sleeping for full effect; it made me want to hide under the covers, kick my feet, and not want to get up go to the bathroom. I scare extremely easily and I hate scary movies--but I loved Ten. I highly recommend it.

Today brings an author who may be a little wicked. Her debut novel features the witchy side of Halloween, while her upcoming novel has something to do with the dead--but without zombies. Please prepare a (nice) spell for...
Victoria Schwab
Trick or treat?
The sweet tooth and the horribly gullible part of me agree: treat.

Truth or dare?

Best Halloween creature?
Witches. They can take so many shapes and do so many things.
What’s the worst and best candy to get on Halloween?
Best: Snickers
Worst: Sweet Tarts

Victoria Schwab as a Musketeer!

If you could be any Halloween creature what would you be?
Once again, witch. Same reasons as above.

How do you celebrate Halloween?
By eating lots of candy when I'm supposed to be handing it out to children.
In about 140 characters or less, please write a super short Halloween story.
I hear it from my room at the top of the stairs. Every night. The groaning door and the steps in the hall and the voice calling me down.

It’s Friday the 13th, you’re home alone, and it’s dark. Simultaneously, the phone rings and you hear somebody upstairs. What do you do?
LEAVE THE DAMN HOUSE.

If you were in a horror movie with a classic killer what would you do to survive?
LEAVE THE DAMN HOUSE.

If some of your characters were going to dress up for Halloween, what would they dress up as?
--Lexi Harris would be a witch.
--Mackenzie Bishop would be a normal girl.
--Wesley Ayers would be a pirate.
What's a random fact about you?
I suffer from wanderlust, but my bones are happy in Scotland.

Using the letters of HOCUS, please describe The Near Witch.

The Near Witch is out, The Archived is releasing in a few months—what’s next for you?
Wheeeeeeeee. Also eeeeeeeeeep. Next up for me, after The Archived, is Vicious. It comes out next September, and it's my first adult book, and it's about supervillains.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Happy Halloween!!!

"The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children. "

"If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company. "

"And there are no strangers in the town of Near."

These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.
But when an actual stranger--a boy who seems to fade like smoke--appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.
The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.
As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi's need to know--about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.
Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab's debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won't soon forget.

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was, a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often-violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn't just dangerous-it's a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da's death was hard enough, but now her little brother is gone too. Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

In this haunting, richly imagined novel, Victoria Schwab reveals the thin lines between past and present, love and pain, trust and deceit, unbearable loss and hard-won redemption.

Be watching Victoria's blog as you wait for The Archived--she has this super cool feature going on called Making History, and you'll definitely want to look into it. Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf: Day 9

Dont Look Behind the Bookshelf
What are you doing here? Did you not see the letters in huge red script?! It told you not to look behind here--and you did. Now you have no choice but to pry your eyes open and be exposed to yet another day of Don't Look Behind the Bookshelf. (You can see yesterday's interview here.) Day 8 brings an author who's debut novel is packed full of Halloween awesomeness, like Steampunk elements and zombies! Her books has been a great hit, so stop moaning and begging brains for a second and welcome...
Susan Dennard
What’s the worst and best candy to get on Halloween?
Candy corn USED to be my all time favorite--be it Halloween season or not. But then I stopped eating processed foods....and seeing how candy corn is mostly just corn syrup, I can't even stomach it any more. :( I tried to last Halloween, and I actually got sick enough to throw up. YIKES.

This year, I'll just stick to some homemade ghost cookies--mmmmmm. Cookies....

What’s your most memorable Halloween costume?
My most memorable costume is from the year I dressed as Link, from the Legend of Zelda. Why is it so memorable? Because I met my husband in that costume! We were at a Halloween party--he was dressed as an American Tourist (Hawaiian shirt, camera around the neck, and flip-flops) while I was, well...you can see me! It was literally love at first sight. He walked up the stairs, we locked eyes, and I knew right away I had to talk to that guy.
Best movie to watch for Halloween? Best book to read?
I love Hocus Pocus! It's definitely one of my favorites. It's kinda angsty YA along with great, laughable villains and a dash of scary. As for the best book, I'm a total wuss, so I avoid straight up horror...but I DO love a good murder mystery! Something cozy, like Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile.
It’s Friday the 13th, you’re home alone, and it’s dark. Simultaneously, the phone rings and you hear somebody upstairs. What do you do?

FREAK OUT. I would instantly look at my dogs and gauge their reactions. If they aren't freaking out, I'd go investigate. If they start barking, though, it's OVER. I am running from the house and screaming for help.

What can you tell us about Something Strange and Deadly? What makes it Halloween-esque?
Something Strange and Deadly is the story of 16-year-old Eleanor Fitt who lives in 1876 Philadelphia. Her brother has been kidnapped by a necromancer, and the only people who can help her are a rag-tag team of misfits known as the the Spirit-Hunters.

The story is definitely Halloween-worthy since there are ghosts, walking corpses, fancy Victorian clothes, and some steampunk inventions tossed in. I'm actually dressing as a Spirit-Hunter for this year's Halloween!

Now that Something Strange and Deadly is out and people are loving it, what’s next?
Well, the rest of the series is on my plate right now. Book 3 is due this winter, so I'm working away at that. I also have some other projects in the works: Screechers, an epic fantasy set in a desert world, and then an untitled murder mystery. What can I say? Halloween is the perfect time to craft up delicious mysteries... :)

The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—

The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.
